Major Course Topics
This course covers a broad range of general topics designed to build foundational knowledge in environmental science. It begins with an introduction to the Foundations of Environmental Science, followed by an exploration of The Building Blocks of Life and Energy that sustain ecosystems. Students will delve into The Web of Life: Ecosystems and Biomes, examining how Populations and Communities in Ecology interact and evolve. The course emphasizes the importance of Biodiversity and Conservation, and investigates Environmental Risks and Human Health associated with pollution and resource use. Topics such as Water: A Precious Resource and Feeding the World address critical global challenges, while Rethinking Agriculture proposes more sustainable methods. Further units include Air Quality and Global Change, Powering the Future, and Waste and Its Management, each highlighting modern environmental issues. The course concludes with a look at Economics, Laws, and the Environment and strategies for Building Sustainable Cities, encouraging students to think critically about the systems that shape our planet and how we can create a more sustainable future.
