Which change would do the most to let her conclude that the app caused the higher scores?

CLEP Exam Scores and College Credit

See the CLEP score the American Council on Education (ACE) recommends for college credit and the semester hours for each exam. ACE recommends a 50 on all 34 exams (the language exams give more credit at a higher score), but your college sets its own credit policy.

How CLEP Works: Costs, Scores, Registration & Retakes

From checking your college's CLEP policy to registering, scheduling your exam, receiving your score and retaking it, here's how the process works.

  1. Check your college

Search its CLEP policy at the top of this page. Each college sets its own score and credit.

  2. Study for the exam

Use a prep course, a study guide or our free practice tests.

  3. Register and book

Pay the $97 exam fee plus a center or remote fee, then book your slot.

  4. Take the exam

At a test center, or at home with remote proctoring. No fixed test dates.

  5. Get your score and credit

Most scores show on screen when the exam ends. Your college gives the credit.

A CLEP exam costs $97, plus the test center's own fee or the remote proctoring fee. Remote proctoring is $30.

Work out what your exams would cost

Service members: DANTES pays the exam and the remote fee for the first attempt. Veterans: the GI Bill pays back the exam and administration fees.

Who Takes CLEP Exams?

CLEP exams are open to high school students, college students, adult learners, military members, veterans and working professionals.

CLEP vs DSST: How Are They Different?

CLEP and DSST can both help you earn college credit by exam. Compare exam costs, retake rules, scoring, registration and the prep available through TransferCredit.

CLEP FAQs

Will My College Accept CLEP Credits?

Many U.S. colleges accept CLEP for credit, but each college sets its own policy. Before taking an exam, check which CLEP subjects your college accepts, the score required and how many credits you can earn: our search at the top of this page has the CLEP policies of 2,239 colleges, and check the college's own website too. TransferCredit can help you prepare once you know which credits your school will accept.

How Many College Credits Can I Earn With CLEP?

The number of credits you can earn depends on your college and the CLEP exams you take. Many exams can fulfill introductory course requirements, but your school decides how many credits to award and which courses they replace. The exam list shows the semester hours ACE recommends for each exam.

How Much Does a CLEP Exam Cost?

A CLEP exam costs $97, plus any test center fee or the $30 remote proctoring fee. Your preparation costs are separate. TransferCredit offers CLEP prep courses ($19), study guides ($5) and free practice tests to help you prepare before test day.

What Score Do You Need to Pass a CLEP Exam?

There is no single passing score for every college. Scores run from 20 to 80, and ACE recommends a score of 50 for college credit on all 34 exams, but your school can set its own required score for each CLEP exam. Always check your college's CLEP credit policy before testing.

Can I Take a CLEP Exam Online?

Yes. All 34 CLEP exams can be taken at home with remote proctoring if you live in the U.S. or are DANTES-funded, or at a test center. CLEP exams are offered year-round, so you can choose a testing option that fits your schedule.

How Hard Are CLEP Exams?

CLEP difficulty varies by subject and your existing knowledge. Some exams may need only focused review, while subjects such as math, science or history may need more preparation. Taking a practice test can help you find weak areas before your CLEP exam.

How Long Should I Study for a CLEP Exam?

Study time depends on the subject, your background and how familiar you are with the exam material. Some students prepare in a few days, while others need several weeks. Start with a practice test, find your weak areas, then build your CLEP study plan around them.

How Do I Prepare for a CLEP Exam?

Start by reviewing the exam topics, then use a CLEP study guide, practice questions and full-length practice tests to check your progress. TransferCredit has subject-focused CLEP prep courses and study guides so you can review the material and practice before test day.

Can I Retake a CLEP Exam If I Don't Pass?

Yes. You can retake the same CLEP exam, but you must wait three months from your test date before taking that exam title again; a retake inside that window is cancelled and the fee is lost. Use the waiting period to review weak areas, take more practice tests and strengthen your preparation.

How Do I Choose the Right CLEP Exam?

Start with your college's CLEP policy and the degree requirements you still need to complete. Choose an exam that your school accepts and that matches a course requirement you want to fulfill. Then review the exam topics and use a practice test to check your readiness.

We source all of this information from the official CLEP®, DSST®, DANTES and VA pages.

What Happens If I Fail a CLEP Exam? You Have a Backup

You can retake the exam after three months. Meanwhile, every plan includes ACE and NCCRS courses on UPI Study: online college courses reviewed for credit, a second way to earn it.

  1. You take the CLEP exam

Most scores show on screen when the exam ends.

  2. You don't pass

It happens. You have two ways forward.

  3. Retake in 3 months

You can take the same exam again three months after your test date.

  4. Your backup: ACE and NCCRS courses

Your plan includes 1 month, 3 months or 12 months of UPI Study's 90+ online courses, reviewed for college credit.

  5. Credit either way

Pass the exam, or pass a course. Your college decides what credit it gives.

CLEP vs DSST vs ACE and NCCRS Courses: Three Ways to Earn College Credit

CLEP and DSST let you earn college credit by passing exams, while ACE and NCCRS review self-paced online courses for credit. TransferCredit gives you a way to prepare for, or take, all three.

Living outside the US?

Remote CLEP is only for people who live in the U.S. or are DANTES-funded, so you would need a CLEP test center in your country. If there isn't one you can get to, ACE and NCCRS courses are online, with no test center to book.

ACE is the American Council on Education. NCCRS is a program of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. UPI Study is a separate school we partner with. Each college decides whether it accepts ACE or NCCRS credit.

Preparing for DSST or AP® Too?

You can prepare for DSST and AP® exams too with focused courses and study guides from TransferCredit: DSST, 8 prep courses and 38 study guides; AP®, 36 study guides.
