CLEP or DSST: what's the difference?

Both let you earn college credit by passing one exam instead of taking a course. Which one you take depends on what your college accepts.

CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams come from the College Board. Most have about 60 to 120 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, scored on a 20–80 scale, and a score of 50 earns the ACE credit recommendation. The exam fee is $97, and you can retake an exam after three months.

DSST exams come from Prometric. Most have about 100 multiple-choice questions in two hours, scored on a 200–500 scale, and a score of 400 earns the ACE credit recommendation. The exam fee is $100, and you can retake an exam after 30 days.

Study guide FAQ

How much are the study guides?
Each guide is a printable PDF for $5, a one-time payment. Or get it all for $29 a month: every study guide for your program (CLEP or DSST) plus its full prep courses, and you can cancel anytime.
What's in a full study guide?
One chapter for each official content area, heaviest first. Every term has a plain-English definition and an example, each chapter names the common traps and ends with a quiz, and the answer key explains every answer. Each guide also has question tactics, 2-, 4- and 8-week study plans and a 2-page cram sheet.
How are the guides made?
Each guide follows the official exam outline from the College Board (CLEP) or Prometric (DSST), using the published weights to order the chapters. Every chapter was written, then fact-checked in a separate review pass against the official exam information.
Should I take CLEP or DSST?
Take the exam your college accepts for the course you want to skip. If it accepts both, compare the exams: CLEP is scored 20–80 with 50 for credit and costs $97; DSST is scored 200–500 with 400 for credit and costs $100. Most colleges award credit for a subject once, not for both exams.
Do colleges accept CLEP and DSST credit?
CLEP exams are accepted at more than 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities, and more than 1,500 recognize DSST. Each school sets its own list of accepted exams, passing scores and credit. Check your college's policy.
Can I retake an exam if I don't pass?
Yes. You can retake a CLEP exam after three months and a DSST exam after 30 days.
